Needs Statement

Human trafficking and systematic exploitation of children continues to be a major problem in Nepal. Current estimates report that 229,000 people in Nepal were subject to modern slavery in 2014 (Walk Free Foundation, 2014); of 3.14 million children working in Nepal, 1.6 million were engaged in dangerous work (United Nations, 2013); and 23,200 people were victims of human trafficking in 2016 (National Human Rights Commission, 2016). Children are often trafficked for sex work or labour in brick kilns, carpet weaving factors, agriculture, and other industries in Nepal.

Description

Global Family Nepal needs to purchase a vehicle that will assist in the rescue of victimized children from their place of exploitation and/or identification to our transit shelter. The transit shelter in Kathmandu identifies and rescues children who have been victimized by human trafficking and other forms of modern slavery, including child labour. Children are identified by our team, law enforcement, and other NGOs. Our team transports these children to our transit shelter and provides them with immediate health and legal care, assessing their needs and referring them to necessary services. While staying at the transit shelter, they remain under the care of qualified and passionate team members. Global Family team members work to identify and locate their families and determine whether it is safe for the children to return to their families. If not, they are placed in long-term family care. The purchased vehicle will also be used to transport children back to their homes and families.
