Needs Statement

Human trafficking is a form of modern slavery that is connected to many other forms of exploitation, including forced/child labor and marriage. The Maldives is a common destination country for trafficked individuals from India and Bangladesh. Both Maldivian citizens and foreigners (including from Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, China, the Philippines, and Eastern Europe) are subject to forced prostitution. It is also a common practice for younger Maldivian girls to be trafficked to Male from other islands for domestic servitude.

Description

This project will develop a curriculum for human trafficking prevention in the Maldives. The curriculum will be adapted from our very own ‘Bhitri Sundarta’ (‘Inner Beauty’) girls’ empowerment curriculum. It will be contextualized for the Maldivian context. New stories will be written that are specifically suitable for girls living in the Maldives, a Muslim island nation. Once the curriculum is finished, it will be used by community-based clubs and schools to help prevent human trafficking and exploitation.
