Needs Statement

Many of the children's parents from this community are factory workers who were encouraged from an early age to work rather than attend school. The students in this club encourage and support one another to stay in school. This is also one of the highest areas for suicide rates amongst teenagers in Kathmandu.

Description

The Thali Miniland School club in Kathmandu, Nepal is a student led club that formed just after the 2015 earthquake. The girl students (and few boys who are invited to join) took action when faced with harassment at school. They meet weekly to discuss matters and listen to one another, work through the ‘Bhitri Sundarta’ (Inner Beauty) curriculum, and raise funds for needy children in their community. These girls have gained confidence and support one another with the encouragement of their parents and school principal. Now, they are training girls from a nearby school to start their own club! The club spreads awareness of trafficking and abuse, and now these children are teaching their peers about their rights and encouraging each other to stay in school. Funds are needed for awareness tools including t-shirts, banners, and club curriculum.
