Needs Statement

Human trafficking is a form of modern slavery that is connected to many other forms of exploitation, including forced/child labor and marriage. The Maldives is a common destination country for trafficked individuals from India and Bangladesh. Both Maldivian citizens and foreigners (including from Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, China, the Philippines, and Eastern Europe) are subject to forced prostitution. It is also a common practice for younger Maldivian girls to be trafficked to Male from other islands for domestic servitude.

Description

Global Family implements community-based clubs that are locally imagined and sustained to prevent human trafficking and reduce the prevalence of other forms of exploitation. Clubs are facilitated by individuals and youth in their own communities utilizing our girls’ empowerment curriculum as well as encouraging other activities that specifically target the risk factors for trafficking and abuse amongst girls in this male dominated part of the world. Funds provide materials and resources for the clubs, including printed curriculum, supplies for crafts and activities, and awareness supplies such as posters.
